Expression Prep announces Rickey Runyon to head the first year of Ex Prep Lions High School Football in 2025.
Boone County native and 2007 graduate of Van High School
Rickey Runion, who has coached at the middle school, high school, and college level, will lead the Expression Prep High School program, which plans to launch in the fall of 2025. Runion has worked as an offensive coordinator in the kanawha Valley with stints at South Charleston and Sissonville. He helped lead both to playoff appearances, with a state championship runner up in 14.
While at South Charleston, the offense set records and produced many award winning players. Runion was able to continue his success at Sissonville. Posting a 9-1 record in his first season, landing the indians to the ranking of 4th in the state and a home playoff game. Runions offense caught fire and for 3 years set reconds in Passing, Rushing, PPG. More players received scholarships to play college football during this time than any other in school history.
in 2019, Runion had an opportunity to go back to WVSU, where he played college football to coach the offensive line. In 2020, Runion would move back to Boone and coach at Sherman High School. a program that had gone 1-9 in 2019 finished the 2020 season 7-3 in a covid shortened season. Runion's offense produced 2 1000 yard rushers and 2500 yards passing with a balanced attack, leading to the selection of county offensive player of the year.
2021 Runion had a short stint at Madison Middle School, where he posted a winning record for the Redhawks before returning to the Kanawha Valley to coach high school football.
I'm excited for the opportunity to lead young men and be a part of them finding themselves. I have always used football as a ministry to motivate my player to be the best versions of themselves every day. To always use what has been given to you and make the best out of it. Here at Expression Prep, we strive for excellence in all we do. I hope to continue that with our football program. I am honored to lead this program and appreciative of Pastor Kevin West and Principal Stephanie Scragg for entrusting me with this task. I look forward to taking on any challenges and the privilege to coach these young men. "Go Lions"
